An off-label medication is one prescribed by a provider for a different purpose than what the FDA has approved it for. It is legal and common for providers to do this when they believe a medication could benefit their patient. Off-label medications are common in situations where:

  • There is no FDA-approved drug to treat a condition
  • There is evidence that a medication works well for off-label use
